Greetings -
This will be a short update because I am on the road in New Jersey,
helping my mom with the move to a new house down the shore, and
her computer is unfamiliar turf for me.
The Richard Sachs Cyclocross Team had one of its best weekends
of the season, results wise. For starters, I want to say that Justin Spinelli
had one of the best races of his 'cross life last week when he was 9th at
the UCI C2 event in Jamesburg, New Jersey. But this past weekend he
topped all! Justin rang the bell on Saturday and Sunday for big wins in
the Elite Men's races at Plymouth and at Lowell. Both venues are in
Massachusetts. Justin is on a tear, and is racing 'cross better than any
season since he took 2nd placein the U23 Natz in 1998.
Spinelli-issimo atmo*.
Further to the south, what was expected to be a recreation of the
war between the states took on a different meaning as some of the
toughest riders on the east coast did battle at back-to-back (or was it
hand-to-hand, as in combat?) UCI C2 events in North Carolina. It's
difficult to say who won the war and on which day, but Sunday's race
saw Amy Wallace race to a fine 2nd place in the Women's Elite event.
In the Men's Elite war, Jon Hamblen was knocked into 5th place on a
technicality since his cut man left the corner just as the 4th place
contender came around. Boo hiss, etcetera. Brian Hayes also rode
very well and netted a 15th spot. On Saturday, the results were also
great - Amy was 4th in her race and Jon, riding as though Angelo
Dundee himself had trained him, came in 3rd, making his first 2006
podium in a UCI race. What amazes me about these cats is that they
beat the heck out of each other every weekend, at venues up and
down the Eastern Seaboard, and still cry out for more as the season
progresses. That killer instinct is Smart Cycling at its best.

This coming Saturday, the RS 'Cross Team will enter the battleground
that is Sterling, Massachusetts and take on all comers at the Baystate
Cyclocross, a UCI C2 event. It is my hope that the contenders make
the weight limit and make this a competition to remember, ya' know -
like when Buster Douglastore into Mike Tyson. Yeah - just like that.
